Abstract:
In thepast 50 years, the floating-gate memory (FGM) has emerged from a charge-storageconcept* to become the prime technology driver of the Digital Age.
FGM (e.g.,EEPROM, NOR and NAND Flash) is a ground-breaking technology for long-terminformation storage, superseding HDD, optical disk and magnetic tape. FGM hasenabled the invention of nearly all modern electronic systems such as thecellular phone, tablet computer, smart IC card, digital TV, MP3 music player, pacemaker, implantable defibrillator, GPS and ABS. FGM has also empoweredtechnology for the development of artificial intelligence, autonomous car, bigdata, cloud computing, internet of everything, robotics, and solid-state drive.
In thistalk, we briefly review the historical development of FGM and project itsfuture trends to the year 2025. As the device dimension is scaled down to thedeca-nanometer regime, we expect that many innovations will be made to meet thescaling challenges, and FGM-inspired technology will continue to enrich andimprove our lives for decades to come.
