内容简介:This talk will give a brief introduction of digital video compression, its techniques, standards, and current development. It will then focus on the various aspects of video quality, including its characteristics, its measurement and improvements. Particular attention has been paid to rate control techniques, which is the main factor that determines the overall video quality at given bitrate. Traditionally, the purpose of a rate control scheme is to maintain the buffer occupancy at certain level by slowly regulating the quantization parameters (QP) of a frame. Slow adjustment of QP could not response to sudden changes of scene complexity, resulting in bits being wasted at complex area, and poor perceptual quality at flat area. The drastic variation of bits could also increase the risk of Buffer underflow/overflow.
At the end of this talk, other important tools that help to improve video quality have also been introduced. These include look-ahead scene change detection, adaptive Group of Picture (GOP) size, adaptive de-blocking filter, adaptive weighted quantization, skin tone detection, night scene detection, one-field picture coding etc. All those tools have been implemented in the current XCODE video transcoder and have significantly improve the video quality, especially at low bit rate.
