学术报告:Coronary IVUS and OCT Image Analysis

Abstract:Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) are well-established imaging modalities allowing assessment of coronary atherosclerosis. Fully-3D analyses of IVUS image pullbacks, combined with virtual histology information, allow prediction of coronary disease progression/regression and offer new insights to plaque development and its changes under standard statin therapy. IVUS, however, does not have sufficient image resolution for imaging and quantification of thin fibrous plaque cap that is frequently associated with plaque rupture and adverse events. Accurate measurements of fibrous plaque cap thickness by OCT is possible and 3D analysis techniques are at their early stages. The talk will focus on plaque development information derived from baseline—follow-up studies in patients with coronary atherosclerosis. Description of IVUS and OCT image analysis methods and presentation of achieved results will be provided.
 
 
Biography: Milan Sonka received his Ph.D. degree in 1983 from the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic. He is Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Research of the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa, Lowell C. Battershell Chair of Biomedical Engineering/Imaging, Professor and past Department Chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering (2008-2013), Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, and Radiation Oncology, Director of the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging, IEEE Fellow, AIMBE Fellow, and MICCAI Fellow. His research interests include medical imaging and knowledge-based image analysis with emphasis on cardiovascular, pulmonary, orthopaedic, brain, cancer, and ophthalmic image analysis. He is the first author of 4 editions of Image Processing, Analysis and Machine Vision book (1993, 1998, 2008, 2014) and co-authored or co-edited 20 books/proceedings. He has published more than 150 journal papers and over 340 other publications. He is past Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging (2008-2014) and member of the Editorial Board of the Medical Image Analysis journal. To bring results of his research work to clinical practice, he has co-founded two medical imaging companies -- Medical Imaging Applications LLC, and VIDA Diagnostics Inc.
